In charming Old Town Alexandria, the owner planned to convert an historic carriage house into an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). The challenge? The original architect struggled with working within the city’s Board of Architectural Review’s (BAR) historic preservation limitations. After a redesign to satisfy the requirements, the Board approved the renovation and conversion of the structure. Today, the lovely rental apartment retains the historic features of the building.
